Built for the Gas City's sun and storms

Hot sun, hail and chinook winters. Roofing in Palliser's Triangle.

Medicine Hat sits in the dry stretch of prairie known as Palliser's Triangle, with a semi-arid climate, plenty of summer sun, hailstorms that track in from the west, and winters broken up by chinooks. This is what each means for your roof, and what an Interlock® aluminum roof can and cannot do about it.

Hail

Storms that track east

On August 7 and 8, 2014, Environment and Climate Change Canada reports, severe thunderstorms formed along the foothills and tracked east toward Calgary and Medicine Hat with golf ball- to baseball-sized hail; property damage topped $450 million. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. Even so, hail can be big enough to dent aluminum, and hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in) is excluded from the material warranty.

Sun

A semi-arid city

Medicine Hat's climate is semi-arid, and summers are long and bright. Years of strong sun are what dry out and fade an asphalt shingle. Interlock panels are aluminum, which cannot rust, under an Alunar® finish covered by the 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty.

Chinooks

Mild spells in the middle of winter

Medicine Hat's winter cold is often broken by mild, dry chinook winds from the west, and the cold comes back after them. Snow on the roof melts in the warm spell and freezes again at night. Aluminum takes up no water, and Interlock panels interlock on four sides with the fasteners covered, so there is nothing for the cycle to pry open.

Permits

No permit for most re-roofs in the city

The City of Medicine Hat does not require a building permit to replace the roofing on a one- to four-unit dwelling, as long as no structural changes are made. Repairs and alterations to the structure do need one. In Redcliff, safety codes permits go through the Town of Redcliff, and Cypress County has its own rules. We confirm what applies before the crew starts.

Older homes

1950s and 1960s houses

Crescent Heights was built mainly in the 1950s and 1960s. On a house that age we inspect the decking and rafters before we price the job, and the panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, so the frame does not have to carry tile-like weight.

Ice dams

Ice dams start in the attic

When heat leaks into the attic, it melts the snow above and the water refreezes at the eaves. The material warranty excludes ice damming, so instead of promising the roof will stop it, we look at insulation and ventilation with you, and add snow guards where sliding snow would land on a door or deck.

Why Medicine Hat homeowners choose aluminum

A Medicine Hat roof you don't replace again. From a company that stays accountable.

Our crews

Our own crews, every roof

Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. installs every Medicine Hat roof with its own crews, from our office in Calgary. The company that quotes the job is the one that does it and answers for it.

Profiles

Most Medicine Hat roofs are Slate

About three in four of the Medicine Hat roofs in our job book are Slate. Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile and Standing Seam are made too, in nine colours, all in Canada. Every profile needs a roof slope of 3/12 or more.

Tear-off

The old roof, on or off

Cedar shakes and shingles, concrete tile and natural slate always come off first. One layer of asphalt can stay if the inspection finds it suitable; two cannot. The written quote says which applies to your house.

Condos

Condo boards and townhouse complexes

A Medicine Hat townhouse complex is run by a condominium corporation under Alberta's Condominium Property Act, and its board decides on the roof. The board gets a single written quote covering every building in one profile and colour, the product documents it asks for, and copies of both warranties.

Warranties

Two warranties in writing

Interlock Roofing, the manufacturer, gives the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty on the aluminum and its finish for as long as the original purchaser owns the home, transferable once, workmanship excluded. The installation is covered by our own 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty.

Price

A fixed price first

We measure, inspect the decking and attic where we can, and give you one written price. Whatever the inspection turns up is in that price before you sign.

Recycled

Up to 95% recycled aluminum

And the last tear-off your house is likely to need.

Straight answers

Medicine Hat roofing questions, plain answers.

All of our answers ↗

Who installs Interlock metal roofs in Medicine Hat?

Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd., the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for Alberta, founded in 1999 and based in Calgary. We install every roof with our own crews. The panels are made in Canada by Interlock Roofing at its plant in Delta, BC. We are BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, Baeumler Approved, and a 2026 GuildQuality GuildMaster Award winner.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Medicine Hat?

Usually not. The City of Medicine Hat does not require a building permit to replace the roofing on a one- to four-unit dwelling if no structural changes are made. If the deck or rafters have to be rebuilt, that is a repair or alteration and needs a permit. Redcliff and Cypress County have their own rules. We confirm what applies to your address before work starts.

How does a metal roof handle Medicine Hat hail?

Well, within limits. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. No roof is hail-proof: very large hail can dent aluminum, the material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in), and storm damage is a matter for your home insurance. Ask your insurer how it treats an impact-rated roof; we can give you the listing.

Which communities does medicinehatroofing.ca cover?

Medicine Hat, Redcliff, and Cypress County, including Dunmore, Seven Persons and Elkwater, plus Suffield, Bow Island and Burdett. Brooks and the rest of Southern Alberta are on calgarymetalroofing.com, with the same company, office and warranties.

Is there a Medicine Hat office?

No. We work from one office, at 210, 3750 46 Ave SE in Calgary, and our crews drive out from there. You can have the consultation on Zoom or at home.

What does a metal roof cost in Medicine Hat?

Our cost page shows real contract prices from the Interlock® roofs we signed in the Calgary & Southern Alberta market in 2025 and 2026. Treat them as a rough guide only: prices vary from job to job with structural and other conditions, and an in-home roof consultation is required for an accurate price. The consultation and the written quote are free.
